After launching our collaboration in December 2025 with Campbell's of Beauly, we asked our favourite local, John Sudgen, owner of Campbell's of Beauly, to share his personal favourites in the Highlands.
Your Favourite Glen or Loch...
Glenelg is a true hidden gem. The journey in is part of the magic, descending from Skye towards Kylerhea gives serene, sweeping views over the Sound of Sleat and Loch Alsh, and from the top of Glenelg towards Glenshiel the landscape opens into quiet, dramatic glens. After taking the charming Kylerhea to Glenelg turntable ferry, be sure to finish with a warm welcome at the Glenelg Inn.

Your Favourite Scenic Route...
If there's a drive that defines the Highlands for me, it’s the Bealach na Bà. Start near Torridon, wind your way over the breathtaking pass to Applecross, and then loop back along the coastal route. It’s pure magic and never gets old no matter how many times you do it.

Your Favourite Viewpoint...
For sunset views that feel almost surreal, head to Achmelvich Beach near Lochinver. It’s a slice of paradise with turquoise waters and soft sands that make it a perfect spot to watch the day end. When passing through Lochinver, don’t miss the Lochinver Larder, famous for its incredibly delicious pies. It’s a bit of a hidden gem and absolutely worth it.

Your Favourite Village...
Plockton is one of those villages that truly has it all. Its pretty waterfront, dotted with boats and even a few palm trees, gives it a quietly magical feel. Drop into the Plockton Inn or the Plockton Hotel for local flavour, and don’t miss the Harbour Fish Bar for classic, no-nonsense fish and chips. With its welcoming vibe, great food, and beautiful setting, Plockton is a picture-perfect Highland village.

Your Favourite Pub...
I’ve already mentioned the Glenelg Inn and the Applecross Inn, so the one west coast pub I love that I haven’t yet named is the Badachro Inn. Set right on the bay, it has a warming fire, dark wood and low ceilings, and all the charm and character you’d hope for. It’s a great place for a pint at the old-school bar, to warm up by the log fire, or even have a game of darts. With local beer on tap, a fantastic gin distillery in the village, and a beautiful view across the water, it’s a perfect west coast stop.

Your Favourite Hotel...
The Torridon is a beautiful hunting-lodge-style retreat on the edge of Loch Torridon, blending traditional Highland character with dramatic mountain scenery. With roaring fires, luxurious rooms and a wonderfully remote feel, it’s perfect for switching off. Links House in Dornoch offers a more boutique experience, with elegant décor, thoughtful details, and a warm, intimate atmosphere. Both hotels deliver exceptional comfort and a memorable stay in two very different yet equally enchanting corners of the Highlands.

Your Favourite Whisky Distillery...
Clynelish Distillery is a must for whisky lovers. It’s known for its wonderfully complex flavour, with hints of citrus, a touch of maritime brininess, and that famous waxy note that sets it apart. A key component of Johnnie Walker Blue Label, it has a character that’s both distinctive and highly prized. The newly revamped visitor centre is excellent for tastings, and it’s just a cracking dram all around.

Your Favourite Local Shop...
And finally, for a taste of true Highland heritage, Campbell’s of Beauly is the place to go. We’re all about keeping long-standing traditions alive with proper quality and authenticity. And yes, of course I’d say that… I’m contractually obliged as the owner!
