Gerry Ettinger founded Ettinger of London in 1934.
Having worked as a film producer in Italy and Germany
(where he worked with Marlene Dietrich) he used
his extensive contacts in continental Europe and
England to create a range of luxury gifts, which
became renowned through the UK for quality and innovation.
After a pause in the 1940's during the war, he returned to London to reinvigorate his
business and with the growth in international trade
the business became very successful.
As the master
of five languages Gerry Ettinger was known for his
international outlook and ability to do cross border
deals at a time when International travel was still
considered exotic. In the 1950's he acquired a small
leathergoods manufacturing business, which had been
making leathergoods in London since the 19th Century
and he used this foundation of craftsmanship and
design to build the business,
which you see today.
Gerry Ettinger continued to
work in the business until well into his 80's and
saw the transformation of the company into one of
the most respected leathergoods manufacturers in
the UK.
In 1995, Robert his elder son who had been
educated in London, Vienna, Montreal and France took over the reins and continued the tradition
of craftsmanship and quality as well as bringing
in some more contemporary designs and leading edge
manufacturing strategies. He further internationalised
the business and helped to develop the business
in Asia, which has become an important region for
the Ettinger brand.
In July 1999, Ettinger of London,
acquired one of Walsall's oldest leathergoods manufacturing
companies James Homer Ltd (established in 1890).
This acquisition breathed new life into one of the
oldest and last surviving English leather goods
manufacturers in Walsall. Homer is at the heart
of Ettinger's hand-made manufacturing process and
is home to some of the most skilled leather craftsmen
in the UK. This also enabled the business to move
production out of London and to expand rapidly in
parallel with the success of the business.
In 1991
Ettinger of London was awarded the prestigious Wimbledon
licence and we now produce a range of exclusive
gifts and leathergoods for this world-renowned tennis
tournament and tennis club.
2001 saw Ettinger of
London join the Walpole group. Formed in 1992 by
top tier British companies, including British Airways,
Chewton Glen, DAKS Simpson, the Financial Times,
William Grant & Sons and the Savoy Group, G Ettinger
was invited to become a member in 2000. Together
with the other members of The Walpole, Ettinger
products have been displayed around the world and
received excellent reviews in the international
press.
The future is of course unknown but our heritage
will always remain and our commitment to craftsmanship,
design and style will not be compromised.
